NBC – Constantine, Ep. 102 Breakdown
“This episode gave us the opportunity to work on some really cool visual effects! While some of the other episodes have been very effects intensive, the second episode was originally more about improving things that were already shot. However due to challenges capturing the intensity production was looking for on set, the episode evolved to become one of the bigger effects driven episodes in terms of shot count, with just over 60 completed shots.
We got the chance to develop the look of the Coblynau, which featured face replacements and some extensive Nuke compositing to make the bodies gritty and mysterious. With some creative animation and cool simulation work in Houdini we also managed to develop a wicked look of how the creatures appeared in the episode.
We also worked on a sequence where the Coblynaus attacked John Constantine in a car. Besides enhancing the look of the creature itself we did some extensive water replacement due to difficulties capture the effect during principal photography.
It was a fantastic episode to work on, and we are very happy with the result!” – Niklas Jacobson, Vfx Supervisor
